Acne Treatments
Acne is a common occurrence for many in their adolescent years, but it can also occur before or even after this period. Although normal, minor acne may come and go on its own, more severe cases can cause permanent scarring. Fortunately, there are a number of techniques available today to treat acne, ranging from habitual changes to medications, advanced laser therapies and chemical peels.
Oral and Topical Medications
Oral and topical medications are most often used to treat mild to moderate acne. These medications typically either decrease your skin’s natural oil production, or remove dirt and oil from the targeted area, lessening the severity and frequency of acne outbreaks.
Blu Light Therapy
Blu Light Therapy offers patients a faster solution for combating acne without the use of oral and topical medications. Using a specially designed light, Blu Light Therapy kills the bacteria in your skin that causes acne.
Blu Light Therapy typically involves a series of three treatments taking 10–20 minutes each and is used in conjunction with Levulan—a topical pharmaceutical.
Afterwards, patients may experience mild sunburn-like redness and peeling for a few days. It is important to use a sunscreen with zinc oxide and SPF 30 or higher for at least 48 hours following treatment, to prevent prolonged redness or peeling.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels fight acne by removing a layer of skin with a specially formulated chemical preparation, allowing your skin to grow back smoother and clearer
Your dermatologist will work directly with you to determine the type and strength of peel necessary for your unique skin. This treatment is often most effective when done at regular intervals based on the strength and type of peel necessary.
Depending upon the type and strength of the peel needed, you may experience several days of peeling after the procedure.
